Vietnam War Memorial Walk

Set along a stunning stretch of South Australia’s coastline, the Vietnam War Memorial Walk offers a moving and reflective experience on the Yorke Peninsula. Officially opened on Vietnam Veterans’ Day in August 2025, this unique memorial invites visitors to honour the courage, service and sacrifice of Australians who served in the Vietnam War, while enjoying one of the region’s most scenic coastal walks.

The memorial forms a 3.7-kilometre section of the popular Walk the Yorke trail, linking the seaside towns of Coobowie and Edithburgh. Winding alongside rugged cliffs and expansive ocean views, the walk blends natural beauty with quiet moments of remembrance.

Along the route, visitors will discover 29 precision laser-cut interpretive signs, each containing detailed information about every Australian unit that served in Vietnam. This extensive information makes the Walk the only memorial of its kind in Australia.

The trail can be accessed from multiple points. At the Coobowie end, a striking three-metre-high archway marks the beginning of the walk. Midway along the route, an honour roll commemorates the 523 Australians who lost their lives in the conflict, providing a place for reflection overlooking the coast. At the Edithburgh end, parking and amenities are available near the entrance to the walk beside the Edithburgh Golf Club.

The Vietnam War Memorial Walk concept was developed by Roger Hogben, a local Vietnam Veteran (4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment), who envisioned a lasting tribute that would educate future generations while providing a meaningful experience for visitors. Created in collaboration with the local community, the walk’s coastal setting was carefully chosen for its natural beauty and its strong connection to nearby towns with proud veteran histories.

Whether you are a history enthusiast, a walker seeking a meaningful coastal experience, or someone wishing to pay their respects, the Vietnam War Memorial Walk is a poignant and memorable addition to the Yorke Peninsula’s growing list of must-visit experiences.
