surfing-PondalowieThe southwest corner of Yorke Peninsula is one of the greatest surfing areas of Australia, with excellent surfing spots ranging from fast, hollow beach breaks to powerful reef set-ups. The coastline inside Innes National Park, near Stenhouse Bay, is rugged and exposed to strong Southern Ocean swells. To the north lies 60 km of west facing coastline characterised by rugged limestone cliffs and long, white sandy beaches. Offshores can be anything from northwest to southeast depending on location, with a variety of reef and beach breaks working all year round. There are breaks in this area that can easily hold surf in the 10 foot range, and on such days crowds are not a problem. Some of the tamer, more easily accessible breaks can become very crowded over the busy summer holiday period.

Berry Bay can be a great option for surfers of all levels when the waves are small. In crystal clear water, the waves break over sand with a little less power than the more challenging and potentially dangerous surf spots that are found to the south of here. This is a very remote beach, so if you are not an experienced surfer, make sure that you surf here only with a friend who has extensive surfing experience.

On January 12, 2013 South Australia's first Surfing Reserve was offically dedicated in a ceremony held at Daly Head.  Originally a secret known only to a few locals, the Daly Head surfing area was discovered by a group of surfers in search of quality breaks on the Yorke Peninsula. Talk by local fishermen of large waves breaking in the area kept the eager surfers hungry in their search, despite the limited beach access throughout the scrub and farmland. By 1961, the surfers' efforts were rewarded with a variety of breaks that make the Daly Head area the stand out that it is to this day.

The Daly Head National Surfing Reserve was the first along Australia's southern coastline. Achieving National Surfing Reserve (NSR) status ensures that Daly Head has recognition as an iconic world class surfing location. It is one of 19 National Surfing Reserves in Australia, and one of only two in South Australia, the other being located at Point Sinclair near Cactus Beach.
