Pine Point to Port Vincent
- Details
Distance: 28.5km (7 hours 8 minutes)
The walk from Pine Point to Port Vincent will give you some of the best views along the trail. This section of the trail has some shared walking/cycling trail, but just before Black Point the two diverge, with cyclists heading along the highway to Port Julia, where they will once again join up with the walkers.
There are four sections to this walk and you can break it down into smaller more manageable parts.
Pine Point to Black Point 4.8km (1 hour 12 minutes)
Black Point to Port Julia 9 km (2 hours 15 minutes)
Port Julia to Sheoak Flat 4.8km (1 hour 12 minutes)
Sheoak Flat to Port Vincent 9.9km (2 hours 29 minutes)
Just before the turn off to Black Point, walkers will follow the coastline, heading down to the beach until reaching Port Julia. Cyclists will follow the highway to Port Julia.
Centrally located on the eastern coast of the Peninsula, Black Point is a popular holiday destination, jutting into the water to create a beautiful white crescent beach. Swimming, fishing crabbing and water-skiing are all popular activities. The Nharangga people called it Koolywurtie, which means 'dirty tail' but the early settlers named it Black Point. Once a 19th century quarantine station where 50 people died of the measles in five days, Black Point has turned its fortunes around and is now one of the most prized pieces of real estate in South Australia.
Port Julia was once a busy port with wheat and barley being loaded onto ketches bound for Port Adelaide. Today, the jetty and cargo shed remain as a reminder of the town's maritime history.
From Port Julia, the trail continues south towards Port Vincent as a shared trail once again. Not too far from Port Julia, you'll come across 'The Dipper', a secluded location loved by locals. From here the trail passes Sheoak Flat, and then continues along the top of the cliffs with some amazing views.
Closer to Port Vincent is the Port Vincent Golf Course. You're now almost there, and the Port Vincent Lookout along the top of the cliffs provides a great view over the marina and the township of Port Vincent.
Please refer to our Trail Notes for further information.
Walk the Yorke is a linear trail covering approximately 500kms, and all distances mentioned are one way unless otherwise indicated.
Geocaching

It's a world wide treasure hunt!
Geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing) is a popular past time for many travellers. It provides an opportunity to see parts of the world that you would never find otherwise. Geocaching combines technology and your own sense of adventure through the use of GPS-enabled devices. Navigate to a specific set of coordinates and discover the geocache hidden at that location.
These caches can be found all over the world in diverse locations. They vary in size and appearance - anything from a small plastic container, a film canister or even a fake rock with a secret compartment! Each geocache contains a log book or sheet for you to log your find. Usually there are some small items inside. If you take an item, always leave something of equal or greater value for the next person to find. Once you've finished with the cache, put it back in it's original position. Then share your findings online for the rest of the geocaching community to enjoy.
There are plenty of geocaches on Yorke Peninsula just waiting for you to discover them. All you need to start playing is to register for a free Geocaching membership at www.geocaching.com.au or download the Geocaching app.
