Snorkelling by Susan PointonYorke Peninsula is one of the key diving areas in South Australia.  There is a wonderful world of nature to be found under the sea, particularly around the shores and jetties.  Scuba diving or snorkelling is a great way to experience and explore under the water.  Our sandy beaches, unspoilt ocean waters and the various habitats of reefs and islands provide an abundance of fish and crustacean species.

We have two underwater Maritime Trails that provide opportunities for the experienced and beginner divers. Try the Investigator Strait Shipwreck Trail or the Wardang Island Maritime Trail.  Waterproof trail booklets can be purchased at Yorke Peninsula Visitor Centre.

Diving 1Diving and snorkelling around the many jetties can be a rewarding experience.  A couple of great places for beginners are Parsons Beach Reef at Parsons Beach, or Port Gilbert at Port Moorowie.

Here is some more information on the best diving and snorkeling places on Yorke Peninsula.

Shipwrecks are not only treasured pieces of maritime history, they also provide fragile marine environments. They are protected under Historic Shipwrecks legislation, which aims to ensure that historic shipwrecks are protected for their heritage values and maintained for recreational, scientific and educational purposes. It also seeks to control actions which may result in damage, interference, removal or destruction of an historic shipwreck or associated relic. Divers can use wreck sites for recreational purposes but relics must not be removed from the wreck site and the physical fabric of the wreck must not be disturbed, unless a permit has been obtained.

If anyone is injured while diving, contact the Diver Emergency Service at the Royal Adelaide Hospital (1800 088 200). Local hospitals are found at Yorketown (8852 1200), Maitland (8832 0100), and Ardrossan (8837 3021).  There is also a 24 hour accident and emergency facility at Minlaton (8853 2200).

Remember, in an emergency phone 000.

Please dive, photograph and explore these shipwrecks if you wish, but do not interfere with them by disturbing or removing anything from them, or by anchoring into the remains.
